The historic landmark of Charlie Parker's house in New York City also holds a special place in American modern art history.  It was the home and studio of abstract expressionist painter - Jose Francisco Sainz.  Even more importantly, it was in the neighborhood of other famous "New York School" artists and close friends of Sainz including Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Esteban Vicente. These artists in this neighborhood were also commonly called "the 10th Street Artists".

Bill de Kooning was the founder of action painting - one of the major techniques of abstract expressionism - and a champion of the works of Francisco.  Paco (Francisco's nickname) was known to paint portrait's of his close friend. Below is the portrait of Bill de Kooning as Admiral de Kooning.

by Francisco Sainz

Francisco purchased the home with winnings from the "Who Do You Trust Show" hosted by Johnny Carson in the late 1950's.  Sainz, who in his youth longed to be a matador in his native Spain, demonstrated his bullfighting skills on the show with Johnny as the bull.

Sainz bought the home to be close to his "New York School" compatriots. He used the second floor as his studio.
