James Talmadge Biography

The artist's studio is filled with canvases in varying states of readiness. Evident is the artist's enthusiasm for a story well told.  Each canvas appears as both a piece of an intricate puzzle as well as a stepping stone to his next work of art.  A glimpse of Talmadge's life experience growing up in Southern California is documented on his canvas.  The artist captures the familiar, mixing a touch of romance in images such as the old women gossiping on a park bench remembering days gone by, kaleidoscopic colors rocketing through downtown freeways at rush hour, and glowing street lamps on a peaceful autumn eve illuminating a Santa Monica park at sunset.

From the time Talmadge was old enough to hold a crayon, he says he knew he wanted to be an artist. Now in his late 40s, everything he's done creatively and professionally since childhood has been directed toward that goal.

At the age of 14, Talmadge was given his first one man exhibition at the Brand Art and Music Center in Southern California.  Shortly thereafter, he was awarded a scholarship to the Los Angeles based Art Center School of Design -- an award presented to one student per year.

Continuing his studies at California State University, Northridge, Talmadge met Professor Harold Schwarm. He credits Schwarm with having taught him "the importance of a brush stroke." The professor's guidance and style would lend a classic influence to Talmadge's truly contemporary experience, opening his eyes to the possibility of not merely capturing, but interpreting what he saw.

After his formal education came to an end, Talmadge's interests were pulled in many challenging directions. Projects included developing educational programs used by school systems across the United States to help disadvantaged and learning disabled students. Talmadge himself had been labeled with a learning disability -- now commonly known as dyslexia -- while attending elementary school.

While he was in his 20s, companies such as Sony, Atlantic Records, Doubleday Publishing, Max Factor, JBL International, ABC, CBS, & KCET employed the artist's talents in various creative endeavors. His diversity and interests led him to explore many disciplines, from producing animated films for Sesame Street, Cheech and Chong and Sonny Bono to creating graphics for the Bill Cosby Show.

During these years, Talmadge continued to hone the skills of his trade, painting every spare minute, including weekends, vacations and all through the night. The art finally demanded his full-time attention. Foregoing all other professional pursuits, Talmadge, in his mid-30s, began concentrating exclusively on his art.

Since his first major retrospective exhibition in 1983 at a top Beverly Hills gallery, his works have been sought after by museums, galleries, private and corporate collectors worldwide.

Talmadge's various creative undertakings today include composing and performing music, creating avant-garde videos and writing poetry and prose. All serve to stimulate and entertain the artist in his down-time from painting.

Among his influences and inspirations, Talmadge cites Van Gogh's paintings and writings. Van Gogh wrote to his brother The about the limitations and the perfection of the art. In the writings, a theme that inspired Talmadge was Van Gogh's struggle to be himself and have people accept him as himself, confirming what Talmadge already knew -- "art has to satisfy the artist first."

Recently, the artist has enjoyed the works of Matisse and Hockney. He says he's influenced by their freedom of expression. "I aspire to that freedom. It's a lifelong pursuit."

Behind the scenes, Talmadge's studio at any given time is cluttered with the tools of his trade. Constant experimentation with media such as acrylics, oil pastels, house paints, charcoal, and oil paints help the artist retain a childlike fascination with the process of creating. Talmadge's primal energy, reflective meditation and boundless imagination join together enhancing the skill of a man who has dedicated his life to his craft.
