Biography

Raphael Abecassis has gained worldwide recognition as an artist that combines traditional Jewish and Sephardic motifs with modern composition and style, contributing to the creation of a modern Jewish art.  Raphael Abecassis has been exhibited in many museums and galleries in Israel, the United States, Europe and Canada.

His work uses innovative techniques of refreshing colors and forms to portray clear compositions and life-celebrating subjects.  With excellent technical performance, Abecassis integrates old and new; natural and mystic; and different mediums such as ceramics stain glass windows and embroidery.

Abecassis' paintings restores a whole artistic tradition and pays tribute to his artistic ancestry by combining scripts and verses, illustrated prayers and the Independence Charter of the State of Israel into his compositions.

The artist's works are a combination of the symbols of long-standing Jewish tradition with an innovative collection of colors and forms. His works are a synthesis of the natural and the supernatural, the traditional and the modern, the decorative and the mystic.  In subtly varied compositions, precise calligraphy and often freshly daring natural colors, Abecassis creates works of the finest aesthetic harmonies and formal perfection. The artist works in a variety of media including paintings, serigraphy, ceramic, embroidery, silver and stained glass windows. People love the artist's wonderful use of color and his whimsical style.

Two such examples are 'Odyssey of Spanish Jews', commemorating 500 years to the expulsion of Jews from Spain, and a collection of twenty-five paintings celebrating the 3000 years anniversary of Jerusalem. Others are his award winning  Independence Day Posters and his work 'Psalms'. Here Raphael Abecassis recreates the mythical world of King David the poet as sung by him in the Bible, describing the Seven Days of Creation and likening it to everyday life.

In both 1986 and 1991 he won the coveted national competition for the official poster of Israel's Independence Day celebrations.

Born in 1953 in Marrakech Morocco, Abecassis immigrated to Israel with his parents at the age of three and later studied art at the 'College of Education' in Israel.
